Sadaqah Formulas
Monthly Sadaqah Formula
Where:
Smonthly = Monthly Sadaqah amount
I = Monthly income
P = Chosen percentage (1% to 20%)
Daily/Weekly/Yearly Breakdown
Sweekly = Smonthly / 4.33
Syearly = Smonthly x 12
Sadaqah Jariyah Impact Formula
Where:
Impact = Total person-days of benefit
P = Number of people benefiting daily
D = Days per year (365)
Y = Years of continuous benefit
Cost per person-day = Amount / Impact
Solved Examples
Example 1: Monthly Sadaqah Plan — 5% of Income
Income: PKR 80,000/month. Sadaqah: 5%. Daily distribution.
Sdaily = 4,000 / 30 = PKR 133
Sweekly = 4,000 / 4.33 = PKR 924
Syearly = 4,000 x 12 = PKR 48,000
In 10 years: PKR 4,80,000 in total Sadaqah
Daily PKR 133 = just one cup of tea saved per day
Example 2: Ramadan Special — Double Charity
Regular monthly: PKR 4,000. During Ramadan: Double. Rewards are multiplied 70x in Ramadan.
Ramadan (double): 4,000 x 2 = PKR 8,000
Yearly total = PKR 52,000
Ramadan rewards multiplied 70x by Allah's mercy
Effective reward value of Ramadan Sadaqah = 8,000 x 70 = PKR 5,60,000 equivalent in rewards
Example 3: Sadaqah Jariyah — Water Well
Cost: PKR 1,50,000. Benefits 500 people daily. Lasts 20 years.
Total person-days = 36,50,000 person-days of benefit
Cost per person-day = 1,50,000 / 36,50,000
Cost per person-day = PKR 0.04 (less than 1 paisa per person per day)
You earn reward for every sip of water by every person for 20 years — even after your death. This is the power of Sadaqah Jariyah.
Example 4: Quran Distribution
Print 100 Quran copies at PKR 800 each = PKR 80,000. Each Quran lasts 20 years. Each read by average 5 people.
People per Quran = 5
Total readers = 100 x 5 = 500 people
Years of benefit = 20
Every letter read from Quran = 10 rewards (Tirmidhi 2910)
Quran has approximately 3,20,000 letters
If each person reads full Quran once = 3,20,000 x 10 = 32,00,000 rewards
500 people = 32,00,000 x 500 = 1,60,00,00,000 rewards
And that is just one reading each. Many will read multiple times over 20 years.
Example 5: Friday Sadaqah — Weekly Giving
Income: PKR 50,000. Give PKR 500 every Friday. Annual calculation.
Fridays per year = 52
Syearly = 500 x 52 = PKR 26,000
Smonthly = 26,000 / 12 = PKR 2,167
Percentage of income = (2,167 / 50,000) x 100 = 4.3%
Friday Sadaqah is especially virtuous as the Prophet (PBUH) said Friday is the best day on which the sun rises.
Sadaqah Rewards from Quran and Hadith
Allah says: "The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a grain that sprouts seven ears, and in every ear there are a hundred grains. Allah multiplies the reward for whomever He wills. Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing."
— Quran 2:261
Allah says: "Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah and then do not follow up what they have spent with reminders of their generosity or hurtful words — they will have their reward with their Lord. There will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve."
— Quran 2:262
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Sadaqah does not decrease wealth. No servant forgives except that Allah increases them in honor. And no one humbles themselves for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises them in status."
— Sahih Muslim 2588
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Protect yourselves from the Hellfire even if with half a date (given in charity)."
— Sahih Bukhari 1417
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "The most beloved deed to Allah is the most consistent one, even if it is small."
— Sahih Bukhari 6464
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "When a person dies, all their deeds end except three: Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity), beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who prays for them."
— Sahih Muslim 1631
Sadaqah Best Practices
1. Give Secretly: The best Sadaqah is given secretly so that "your left hand does not know what your right hand gives" (Bukhari 1423). Secret charity protects from showing off (riya).
2. Give Consistently: Small regular charity is better than large occasional amounts. Set up a daily or weekly habit. Even PKR 10 daily = PKR 3,650 per year.
3. Give from What You Love: Allah says: "You will never attain righteousness until you spend from what you love" (Quran 3:92). Give your best, not your leftovers.
4. Give on Fridays: Friday is the best day of the week. Combining Sadaqah with Friday adds extra blessing.
5. Give in Ramadan: Rewards are multiplied many times in Ramadan. The Prophet (PBUH) was "more generous than the blowing wind" during Ramadan (Bukhari 6).
6. Do Not Invalidate Charity: Do not follow Sadaqah with reminders or hurtful words (Quran 2:264). Give and forget — let Allah remember.
7. Prioritize Relatives: Giving to poor relatives earns double reward — charity + maintaining family ties (Tirmidhi 658).
8. Include Sadaqah Jariyah: Invest in projects with lasting benefit — water wells, masjids, Quran distribution, orphan education. These keep earning you reward even after death.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is there a minimum amount for Sadaqah?
A: No. Even half a date, a glass of water, a smile, or a good word counts as Sadaqah. The Prophet (PBUH) said "Even meeting your brother with a cheerful face is Sadaqah" (Tirmidhi 1956).
Q: Can I give Sadaqah to non-Muslims?
A: Yes. Unlike Zakat, Sadaqah can be given to anyone — Muslim or non-Muslim, rich or poor, human or animal. Even feeding a stray cat or watering a plant is Sadaqah.
Q: Is Sadaqah the same as Zakat?
A: No. Zakat is obligatory (Farz), has fixed rates (2.5%), specific conditions (Nisab, 1 year), and specific recipients. Sadaqah is voluntary, has no limits, no conditions, and can be given to anyone for any good purpose.
Q: Can I give Sadaqah on behalf of deceased parents?
A: Yes, and this is one of the best things you can do for them. The reward reaches them and benefits them in the grave. The Prophet (PBUH) confirmed this in multiple Hadith.
Q: Does spending on my family count as Sadaqah?
A: Yes. The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Whatever you spend on your family is Sadaqah" (Bukhari 55). Even buying food for your wife and children with the intention of reward is charity in Allah's sight.
Q: Can I count Sadaqah as part of my Zakat?
A: No. Zakat and Sadaqah are separate. Zakat has strict rules about who can receive it. Sadaqah is additional voluntary charity above and beyond Zakat. You cannot deduct Sadaqah from your Zakat obligation.
Important Note
Sadaqah is purely voluntary and there is no fixed percentage required in Islam. The percentages shown in this calculator are suggestions to help you plan, not religious requirements. Give whatever you can afford with a sincere heart. Remember: consistency matters more than amount. A small daily habit is more beloved to Allah than a large one-time donation.
