Solved Examples
Example 1: Pakistani Couple — Standard Package
Husband and wife want to perform Hajj in 2028. Current standard package cost: PKR 12,00,000 per person. Annual inflation: 8%. Already saved: PKR 5,00,000. Extra budget: 10%.
Years until 2028: n = 2 (from 2026)
Cfuture = 12,00,000 x (1 + 0.08)2
Cfuture = 12,00,000 x 1.1664
Cfuture = PKR 13,99,680 per person
Step 2: Total for 2 persons
Subtotal = 13,99,680 x 2 = 27,99,360
Step 3: Add extras (10%)
Ctotal = 27,99,360 x 1.10 = 30,79,296
Step 4: Subtract already saved
Need = 30,79,296 - 5,00,000 = 25,79,296
Step 5: Monthly savings
Months = 2 years x 12 = 24 months
Monthly = 25,79,296 / 24
Monthly Savings = PKR 1,07,471
Yearly = 1,07,471 x 12 = PKR 12,89,648
Weekly = 1,07,471 / 4.33 = PKR 24,820
Daily = 1,07,471 / 30 = PKR 3,582
Example 2: Indian Family — Economy Package
Family of 3 (husband, wife, elderly father). Target: 2029. Economy package: INR 4,00,000. Inflation: 10%. Saved: INR 2,00,000. Extras: 15%.
Cfuture = 4,00,000 x (1.10)3 = 4,00,000 x 1.331 = INR 5,32,400
Subtotal = 5,32,400 x 3 = 15,97,200
With extras = 15,97,200 x 1.15 = 18,36,780
Need = 18,36,780 - 2,00,000 = 16,36,780
Months = 36
Monthly = INR 45,466
Example 3: USA — Premium Package, Solo
Single person. Target: 2027. Premium: $15,000. Inflation: 5%. Saved: $3,000. Extras: 20%.
Cfuture = 15,000 x (1.05)1 = $15,750
With extras = 15,750 x 1.20 = $18,900
Need = 18,900 - 3,000 = $15,900
Months = 12
Monthly = $1,325
Weekly = $306 | Daily = $44
Example 4: Reverse — When Can I Afford Hajj?
Monthly saving capacity: PKR 25,000. Target: PKR 14,00,000. Already saved: PKR 2,00,000.
T = 12,00,000 / 25,000 = 48 months
T = 4 years (48 months)
Target date: Mid 2030
Hajj season 2030: approximately July 2030
Hajj Savings Tips
1. Start Early: The earlier you start saving, the smaller the monthly amount. Starting 5 years early vs 2 years makes a huge difference in monthly burden.
2. Open a Dedicated Account: Keep Hajj savings separate from daily spending. Many banks offer Hajj savings accounts with profit-sharing (Islamic banking).
3. Account for Inflation: Hajj costs increase 5-15% every year. Always calculate with inflation to avoid a shortfall at the end.
4. Budget for Extras: Tour package is not the only cost. Shopping, gifts, Zamzam, pocket money, and emergencies can add 10-30% on top.
5. Book Early: Many operators give early bird discounts. Government schemes are usually cheaper but spots fill up fast.
6. Compare Packages: Get quotes from at least 3-5 operators. Check reviews, verify hotel proximity to Haram, and confirm all inclusions in writing.
7. Pay Debts First: According to many scholars, paying off debts is priority over Hajj. Hajj is Farz only when you can afford it without financial hardship.
8. Government Schemes: Pakistan (Ministry of Religious Affairs), India (Hajj Committee), and other countries offer subsidized Hajj packages. Apply early as spaces are limited.
9. Health Preparation: If you are elderly or have health conditions, budget for medical insurance and medications. Hajj is physically demanding — prepare your body months in advance.
10. Automatic Savings: Set up automatic monthly transfer to your Hajj savings account on salary day. What you do not see, you do not spend.
When is Hajj Farz (Obligatory)?
Hajj becomes Farz when ALL of these conditions are met:
| Condition | Detail |
|---|---|
| Muslim | Must be a Muslim |
| Adult (Baligh) | Must have reached puberty. Child can perform Hajj but it does not count as Farz Hajj — they must repeat it as an adult. |
| Sane (Aqil) | Must be mentally sound |
| Free | Must not be enslaved (relevant historically) |
| Financial Ability (Istita'ah) | Must have enough wealth to cover: round-trip travel, Hajj expenses, AND leave enough for family's needs during absence. Must not go into debt for Hajj. |
| Physical Ability | Must be physically capable of performing Hajj rituals. If permanently unable, can send someone as Hajj Badal (proxy). |
| Safe Route | The travel route must be safe. If war, pandemic, or danger exists, Hajj obligation is postponed. |
| Mahram (for women) | A woman must have a Mahram (husband or male relative she cannot marry) to accompany her. Some scholars allow group travel for women over 45 without Mahram. |
Allah says in the Quran: "And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka'bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one's conveyance, provision and residence). And whoever disbelieves (i.e. denies Hajj), then Allah stands not in need of any of the creation."
— Surah Aal-e-Imran 3:97
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not commit any obscenity or commit any evil will go back (free of sin) as on the day his mother bore him."
— Sahih Bukhari 1521, Sahih Muslim 1350
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "An accepted Hajj has no reward except Paradise."
— Sahih Bukhari 1773, Sahih Muslim 1349
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is it permissible to take a loan for Hajj?
A: Most scholars say Hajj is NOT Farz on someone who cannot afford it. Taking a loan for Hajj is discouraged. Pay off existing debts first, then save for Hajj. If you take a loan, Hajj is valid but it is better to wait until you can afford it.
Q: Can I save in a bank savings account for Hajj?
A: If using conventional banking, the interest (riba) earned is not permissible. Use an Islamic bank's Hajj savings account which operates on profit-sharing (Mudarabah/Musharakah) principles. Many Islamic banks in Pakistan, India, and UAE offer Hajj-specific accounts.
Q: My parents want to go but cannot afford it. Can I pay for them?
A: Yes, this is a great act of kindness (birr al-walidayn). You can pay for your parents' Hajj. The Hajj is valid and you earn enormous reward for serving your parents.
Q: What if I save enough but the cost increases beyond my savings?
A: This is why we include inflation in our calculator. Always save with a buffer of 10-20% above the estimated cost. If costs still exceed savings, Hajj obligation is postponed until you can afford it.
Q: How far in advance should I start planning?
A: Ideally 3-5 years in advance for financial planning. For the actual trip, start booking 6-12 months before Hajj season. Apply for government schemes 8-12 months before.
Q: Is Hajj Farz every year?
A: No. Hajj is Farz only ONCE in a lifetime. After performing Farz Hajj, any additional Hajj is Nafl (voluntary) and earns extra reward but is not obligatory.
