Meat Distribution Formula (Sunnah)
Sunnah division (recommended):
1/3 = For your family (personal use)
1/3 = For relatives and friends (gifts)
1/3 = For the poor and needy (charity)
You can also keep more or give more — this is a recommended (Mustahab) division, not strictly obligatory. But giving to the poor is highly emphasized.
Solved Examples
Example 1: Whole Goat — Single Person
One person buying a goat for PKR 65,000. Butcher fee: PKR 3,000. Estimated meat: 15 KG.
Total = 65,000 + 3,000 = PKR 68,000
Shares = 1 (goat = 1 share only)
Per share = PKR 68,000
Meat Distribution (15 KG):
Family: 15 x 1/3 = 5 KG
Relatives/Friends: 15 x 1/3 = 5 KG
Poor/Needy: 15 x 1/3 = 5 KG
Example 2: Cow — 7 Shareholders
7 people sharing a cow for PKR 3,50,000. Extra expenses: PKR 21,000. Estimated meat: 120 KG.
Total = 3,50,000 + 21,000 = 3,71,000
Per share = 3,71,000 / 7 = PKR 53,000
Meat per share (120 KG total):
Each shareholder gets: 120 / 7 = 17.1 KG
Each shareholder's meat distribution (17.1 KG):
Family: 17.1 x 1/3 = 5.7 KG
Relatives: 17.1 x 1/3 = 5.7 KG
Poor: 17.1 x 1/3 = 5.7 KG
Example 3: Family Taking Multiple Shares
Husband takes 3 shares in a cow (1 for himself, 1 for wife, 1 on behalf of deceased father). Cow: PKR 4,00,000. Extras: PKR 15,000.
Per share = 4,15,000 / 7 = PKR 59,286
His cost (3 shares) = 59,286 x 3 = PKR 1,77,857
Note: Taking a share on behalf of deceased (Eesal-e-Sawab) is permissible and the reward reaches the deceased InshaAllah.
Example 4: Multiple Animals
A wealthy person buying 2 goats (PKR 70,000 each) + 1 cow share (PKR 55,000). Total Qurbani.
Goat 2 = PKR 70,000
Cow share = PKR 55,000
Total = PKR 1,95,000
This person is doing 3 Qurbanis — 1 Wajib (for self) + 2 Nafl (extra reward). This is Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who used to sacrifice extra animals.

Qurbani for Deceased Persons
It is permissible and rewarding to perform Qurbani on behalf of deceased family members. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) performed Qurbani on behalf of his entire Ummah, including those who had passed away and those yet to come.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is Qurbani Wajib or Sunnah?
A: According to Hanafi fiqh (followed in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Turkey), Qurbani is Wajib on every eligible Muslim. According to Shafi, Maliki, and Hanbali schools, it is Sunnah Muakkadah (highly emphasized Sunnah). Either way, it should not be missed.
Q: Can all 7 shares in a cow be for one family?
A: Yes. One family can take all 7 shares of a cow/buffalo/camel. For example, a family of husband, wife, and 5 adult children can each take 1 share in the same cow.
Q: Can one share be for Qurbani and another for Aqeeqah?
A: Yes, in a shared animal (cow/buffalo/camel), different shareholders can have different intentions — some for Qurbani, some for Aqeeqah, some for general charity (sadaqah). The key is that every shareholder must have a valid Islamic intention, not just buying meat.
Q: Can I give ALL the meat to the poor?
A: Yes, this is permissible and very rewarding. The 1/3 division is Mustahab (recommended) not Wajib (obligatory). You can give everything to the poor if you wish.
Q: What happens if I miss all 3 days?
A: If you were eligible but did not do Qurbani during the 3 days, you must give the equivalent value of a goat/sheep in Sadaqah to the poor. The opportunity for actual Qurbani has passed.
Q: Can I buy Qurbani online or donate to an organization?
A: Yes, many reliable Islamic organizations perform Qurbani on your behalf in Pakistan, Africa, or other countries where the need is greatest. Ensure the organization is trustworthy and actually performs the sacrifice in your name with proper Islamic method.
